What is Exercise Physiology?
What is Exercise Physiology?
Exercise physiologists (EPs) prescribe exercise to treat acute injuries, and manage chronic health conditions. EPs have a broad knowledge of the human body and the many benefits exercise has, both physically and mentally.
Exercise physiologists offer a range of services including physical rehabilitation, health education, behavioral coaching, and assessments of physical capacity (fitness, strength etc).
Exercise physiology can help with a number of health conditions such as:
- Stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
- Autism
- Spinal cord injury
- Intellectual disability
- Cerebral palsy
- Traumatic brain injury
- Charcot-Marie tooth disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Dementia
- Muscular dystrophy
Who can benefit from Exercise Physiology?
Seeing an Accredited Exercise physiologist can benefit absolutely everyone and anyone. Exercise Physiology supports people living with disability and chronic medical conditions to minimize the impact of their disability or illness through exercise and improving their physical fitness.
Disability and exercise
Evidence shows that people with a disability are less likely to participate in regular exercise compared to those without a disability, yet both have similar needs when it comes to improving their health and preventing chronic conditions.
For those who are living with a disability, exercise offers a broad range of benefits for the individual.
- It improves stamina and muscle strength which may help with some forms of disability
- Keeping active will reduce the risk of chronic conditions in the future such as arthritis & diabetes
- When exercising, the brain releases endorphins that deliver a ‘feel good’ high which helps with anxiety, depression and mood
- It allows people with a disability to maintain a higher level of independence, sense of freedom and quality of life
Exercise Physiology at The Hunter Health Project
We work in a non-clinical environment with a full gym facility which we believe reduces the ‘cycle of sickness’. This allows the individual to feel more energised and motivated as they are in a ‘healthy population’ environment, thus, resulting in a more successful outcome.
We are a covid safe facility and follow all guidelines set by the government.
